The Five Senses Reader app for iOS makes use of the latest accessibility API's and features available on the iOS platform. It is fully integrated with the iOS "Voice Over" mode, the industry leading toolset for developing accessible learning applications. This integration in the Five Senses Reader includes the use of:
- Accessibility Labels: The app includes both Accessibility Labels and UI Labels for all elements of the user interface of the application for voice-based navigation and usability
- Tab Orders: The app includes metadata that group user interface elements into logical feature groupings and presentation order for increased usability with the alternative input and gestural options available via Voice Over mode.
- Dynamic Type: The interface of the application is developed using Apple's "Dynamic Text" toolset that enable users to adjust the size and appearance of icons and text used in the interface. In addition to the standard dynamic type sizes, the Five Senses App offers a number of even larger sizes for users with accessibility needs; using sizes, weights, and leading designed specifically for that purpose.
- Dark Mode: The app is built to work with the iOS Dark Mode, which provides a high contrast and low light mode that is particularly useful for some students with macular degeneration.
- Read Aloud: The Five Sense Reader app can read the content of EPUB and PDF ebooks out loud in over 30 synthesized languages, and students can adjust the voice’s dialect and speaking rate.
Note: Some customers have asked about the WCAG standard. This standard is for web sites rather than for mobile or desktop applications, and so it does not directly apply to this use case. That said, the set of accessibility features of iOS in Voice Over mode are comparable (and in some cases exceed) the WCAG 2.0 standard
Now that we have completed the work on our iOS platform, we are in the process of optimizing all of our other platforms for Accessibility.
Communication between FS Portal and Canvas is based on the LTI standard over the SSL.
